A private co-educational secondary school was founded in Asikkala in 1926. When Finland went comprehensive in the 1960vs, the school became part of the municipal school system in 1975. It is now divided into the Upper Comprehensive School and the Secondary School. Both schools are still located inside the same building and the two schools share most of the teaching staff.
The amount of teachers is about 40. The Upper Comprehensive has over 300 students and the number of Secondary School students is about 170. The age of the Upper Comprehensive School students is between 13 and 15. The school is attended by 99 % of the children of that age in Asikkala district. About 60 % of the children continue their studies in the Secondary School and take their matriculation examination at the age of 18 or 19.

The students in both schools are offered a wide choice of subjects varying from such practical subjects as cooking and carpentry to history, science and mathematics. In addition to the mother tongue and the compulsory languages English and Swedish, the studies of French and German are available in both schools. Vääksy Secondary School works in co-operation with other schools in Asikkala and in Lahti and the students can choose certain subjects from these schools, too.
The school year is divided into two terms - the so called autumn term from mid-August to Christmas and the spring term from the beginning of January to the end of May or early June. The school year is also divided into five periods of about seven weeks each, and most of the tuition is given in course form, each course consisting of 38 hours. An average school day starts at 8 or 9 a.m. and finishes at 2 or 3 o'clock p.m. The students of both schools are offered a free lunch.

Vääksy Secondary School is known for its high academic level, and a relatively high percentage of its students gain admittance in universities and other schools of university level each year.
